Inspired by Greene & Greene Craftsman style (douglas fir, quality handwork), Eichler (atrium), Japanese Machiya (row house) architecture (central atrium), and especially Japanese Minka (farm house) architecture (curved structural and decorative beams)

Architect was Alfred Klyce, a fourth generation Mill Valley architect, trained in Japan
Builder was Steen Moller, Structural Art, trained in Holland as a wooden boat builder.
The site is bedrock.

Garden

Designed by Eiji Nakamura, Japanese influenced dry style garden.

Large boulders imported from Montana closely match those found in Japan.

Two Japanese maples, two Japanese cherries.

Front Gate and Wall

Japanese Machiya (row house) style wall, with ceramic tile roof imported from Japan.
Gate designed and built by Japanese temple builder Hiroshi Sakaguchi of Ki Arts, Occidental California.  Material is Alaskan yellow cedar using traditional no-nail construction techniques.
The door is opened with a traditional wooden lock rather than a doorknob.

Sliding pocket front doors such as this are common in Japan.

Entry

Follows the typical Japanese style, where you step up into the house.  The tiled lower portion is for shoes and is considered exterior.
Immediately in front of the guest is the Tokonoma, a recessed alcove for displaying a seasonal hanging scroll, ikebana, or a bonsai plant.  Our Tokonoma is modernized, without the traditional raised floor.
To the right is a modernized interpretation of the tokobashira, a sizable vertical post setting off the tokonoma alcove from the rest of the room.

Entry Hallway

This hallway requires the guest to make two turns before entering the core of the house.  These turns are an important part of Asian house design and feng shui. The belief in Asia is that evil spirits cannot make turns, so these turns protect the house from evil spirits.
This hallway is also narrow and tall, creating a feeling of compression before the guest expands as they approach the atrium at the end.

Central Atrium

An important feature of Machiya architecture, the central atrium creates a secluded garden separated from the outside world.
This garden has a Tsukubai water basin, and a small Buddha statue.
The water feature is on a wall switch.
Adjustable lighting is on all four corners.
The sprinkler system is on a timer, accessed below the deck via a movable hatch.
A French drain runs around the perimeter.
The roof gutters empty into the French drain.
A deck allows for closer viewing.
The rocks are similar to those found in Japan.  They match those in the garden, imported from Montana.

Atrium Hallway

Surrounding the atrium is the Engawa, a hallway immediately adjacent to the outdoors.  This is a traditional element in Japanese architecture.
Our Engawa is modernized, smoothly blending into the living room and adjacent flooring areas.
At the ends of each section of hallway is a wall space suitable for hanging art.

Media Room

Wall to wall douglas fir bookshelves and entertainment center.
Wiring led back to the office for piping in music.
Built in B&W wall speakers and sub-woofer.
Fusuma paper sliding doors align with the center of the atrium doors and doors to the deck.
Sonos wireless sound system.

Kitchen

Designed with enough space so two cooks can comfortably work simultaneously.
Central island with butcher block maple countertop.
Other countertops are Caesarstone.
Cabinets are made of Trespa Meteon, a fiberglass-like material that is impervious to water.
The wall of cabinets contains a full size refrigerator plus two refrigerator drawers.  Sub-zero.
Two freezer drawers are located at the end of the island, next to the dining area. Sub-zero.
Two sinks, two dishwashers, two garbage disposals.
There are soap dispensers in the counter, as well as a reverse osmosis drinking water filtration system that is linked to the ice maker.
The island contains a microwave drawer.
The wall contains a custom made indoor smoker, from Klose BBQ pits in Texas.

The stove is a Bluestar, the hood is from Vent-a-hood.
Lighting is metal halide, lights take a little while to warm up but use very little power.
Lighting balasts are located above the BBQ (accessed from the pantry), above the vent hood, and under the counter to the right of the stove (accessed from outside).
